Disney After Dark

I believe the Disney-ABC Television Group is missing out on some great opportunities, by limiting their audience with only kids’ programming on their Disney branded channels. Much like The Cartoon Network has their Adult Swim programming block, Disney could benefit from programming aimed at its adult audience but under the Disney brand.  Here are my suggestions for the proposed Disney After Dark programming block.

1.  Create Spinoffs from Existing Disney Properties

While I don’t expect Mickey Mouse to be transformed into a swinging sex-craved bachelor, there is nothing wrong with creating a character who is friends with Mickey (or another Disney character) having a show developed around their own life.  Considering the suggestive behaviour of Disney’s own little pixie, Tinkerbell, there should be no problem finding a character who inhabits either Neverland or Pixie Hollow that could adapt to a more adult lifestyle.

2. Use Proven Formulas

There is no need to reinvent the wheel.  The number of successful reality shows that have been produced over the last couple years should be proof of that.  So, why not take an already existing successful Disney program’s premise and spin it into an adult-oriented show.  For example, Hannah Montana has been a big hit for Disney, not just for TV viewership, but licensed merchandise.  The story of a girl who leads a double life (student by day, famous pop singer by night) is intriguing and fun for the audience to watch.  Taking that same story and making it more interesting for an adult audience wouldn’t require a great deal of work.

3. Original Movies

Part of Disney’s most recent success has come in the form of made-for-cable movies that attract a large audience.  Movies like Camp Rock and High School Musical have seen ratings for the Mosue Network as well as a slew of DVD sales.  Grabbing the attention of an older audience shouldn’t require a great deal of work.  Otherwise, Hustler would be out of business.

If anyone from the ABC-Disney family would like to consider my proposal and is interested in sending me loads of cash, please leave a comment below.  Anyone who has their own show ideas, feel free to leave a comment as well.  Just be aware, I’m taking a cut on whatever money exchanges hands between you and the big mouse.
